Functional Map: Build Version One
The Functional Map is the founder’s bird’s-eye view of the company: its major functions, the outcomes they produce, who owns them, where work is visible, where handoffs fail and what deserves attention next.
It is not an org chart, a corporate department chart or a software dashboard.
Draw yours
Use one page. Start from the Function Inventory, then work across the map in this order:
- Write the recurring outcome each active function exists to produce.
- Name one accountable owner—or write “founder” or “no clear owner”.
- State what that owner may decide without asking the founder.
- Record where the work and its current state can be seen.
- Mark the handoffs where information, physical work or ownership regularly disappears.
- Give each function one Attention rating: low, medium or high.
- Circle no more than three areas of attention.
- Write the next LEOS move beside each one: Locate, Establish, Organise or Strengthen.
- Choose one recurring point of friction to address first.
