Function Inventory

Before you draw the Functional Map, decide which enduring outcomes the company genuinely has to produce. A person is not a function. A function continues when names, titles and suppliers change.

Starting functions

• Sales — profitable, deliverable commitments.
• Marketing — findability, legibility, credibility and stable recognition.
• Finance — visible cash, commitments and trade-offs before decisions.
• Delivery and Operations — reliable customer outcomes and dependable recurring work.
• Projects — decisions turned into visible, owned movement.
• People — capable people joining, succeeding, managing and leaving without taking the company’s memory.
• Risk — obligations, authority and evidence visible before preventable trouble grows.
• Product or Service Development — improvement without losing what the company has learned.

Mission Control is not another function. It is the review layer from which leaders see the galaxy as a whole.

Adapt the list

A physical company may need procurement, logistics or inventory to be visible inside Delivery and Operations. A software company may separate Product, Engineering and Security. A service company may combine Delivery and Customer Success.

Ask what recurring outcome the company must make true, whether it would still exist if the current owner left and whether it needs its own owner, authority boundary, route or review rhythm.
